Herscu laboratory is helping to develop systems that promote reliable testing and research into CAM approaches such that care providers can have reliable and unbiased information about the efficacy and mechanism of action of particular CAM offerings.

Public Health Infrastructure and CAM

As an extension of the influenza treatment trials, Herscu Laboratory is researching and developing public health tools to be utilized in the CAM arena. The goal is two-fold; to develop tools that can help to predict, characterize, and identify effective treatment for a rapidly shifting epidemic, and also to create the necessary infrastructure to distribute such tools quickly and efficiently.

Influenza Treatment

A pilot study is currently on-going in partnership with the Helfgott Center in Portland, Oregon. The study is a controlled trial on treatment of naturally-occurring influenza with homeopathic medicine. Beyond carrying out a well-designed controlled trial to examine the efficacy of homeopathic treatment on influenza, the broader aim of the study is to develop a systematic way to determine the appropriate treatment for the current epidemic as well as generate a predictive tool for identifying those who will benefit from the treatment that is applicable in a public health setting.


Herscu Laboratory has also developed review papers on influenza trial design methodology and CAM study approaches, as well as overviews on homeopathic design quality considerations and history of homeopathy in influenza treatment.

Military Applications for CAM (MACAM)

Herscu Laboratory is involved in a long term project aimed at developing medical applications for CAM therapies in military settings, with a focus on acute physical and psychological trauma as well as the long term effects of trauma such as under the broad heading of PTSD. Application development is focused upon creating on-site, easily applied clinical prediction tools that aid in the rapid and accurate assessment and differentiation of acute and chronic conditions, and lead to effective and individualized treatment decisions.

CAM Treatment Targeting

Similar to the pharmaceutical research direction, Herscu Laboratory is developing tools to aid in the development and targeting of CAM therapies. Applications are based on the identification of clinically relevant sub-groups within heterogeneous trial populations, such that therapy can be targeted more effectively towards the individuals who will benefit the most, in a predictable and reproducible way. Herscu Laboratory is also researching methodologies for efficiently identifying novel uses for existing natural medicines.

CAM Trial Development

Herscu Laboratory, in conjunction with partners like The Helfgott Research Center, is developing high-quality clinical trials in various CAM modalities. The main research goal is to reproduce the standardized elements of conventional drug trials that are applicable to CAM studies of similar focus, and to innovate and update trial design that is out-dated or inappropriate. By helping to design acceptable and reproducible trials, Herscu Laboratory hopes to help generate productive discussion on the role of CAM therapies in modern medicine.
